Mauro Molino Barolos

Our first Wine Find is a terrific portfolio of value-driven small production wines from Mauro Molino in La Morra Italy – located in the Piedmonte (northwest corner of Italy near France). Mauro Molino is young and dynamic, but strongly connected to its tradition and roots. They produce wines from the following vineyards: Barolo, Langhe DOC Nebbiolo, Barbera d’Alba. These wines have exceptional tasting qualities.

I thought that all of these wines were fabulous – but I’ll highlight the Barolo’s.

The 2011 Barolo is a blend of 2 single vineyards of Nebbiolo grown in soil of calcareous clay. This wine comes from a warm year, so it is fruity and approachable while young.  A fabulous find.

The 2012 Mauro Molino “Gallinotto” is a single vineyard Barolo that is elegant and delicate with much finesse. It is aged in 20% new and 80% neutral oak – 1 year in French barriques and 1 year in large barrels. This Barolo has velvety tannins and a long finish!  This will cellar for 15+ years.

The 2012 Mauro Molino “Bricco Luciani” is another single vineyard from Barolo that has great acidity and a surprisingly tropical nose! It is aged for 2 years in French barriques. The bouquet is quite intense with mango and peach on the nose. This is a well-structured wine with remarkable tannins – with a long finish. I thought this was one of the most interesting wines I’ve had in a long time! This will cellar for 20+ years.
